Warwickshire County XC Champs – Jan 2020

A reminder that the closing date for the Warwickshire County Cross Country Championships is fast approaching – this Thursday (12th December).

We are using the new EA sponsored XC entry system for the first time this year. We have had feedback from some clubs that it is more time consuming to do club/bulk entries but there is a method for them which I wont explain here but please get in touch for details.
Many of you will know that parkruns and a recent senior cross country match at Churchfields  were cancelled. Hopefully the venue will be OK in January but we are looking at alternatives just in case and if anything changes we will let you know.
In the meantime have a very Merry Christmas and we hope you all have a very prosperous 2020.

2019 Annual Awards

Warwickshire County AA 2019 annual performance awards

Endurance Trophy – Jack Gray of Cambridge & Coleridge AC

Ellis Trophy – Lewis Byng of Stratford Upon Avon AC

The President of Warwickshire County AA, for 2019 Becky Freeman, awards two annual trophies – the Endurance Trophy for the best endurance performance by a County athlete and the Ellis trophy for the best non-endurance performance.

For the Endurance Trophy, Becky has chosen Jack Gray who competes for Cambridge & Coleridge, but started his athletics career at BRAT.   Jack won the Midland Cross Country Champs and was 8th in the National Cross Country Champs at Leeds. In 2019 Jack lowered his 5,000m and 10,000m pb’s on the track and is ranked 10th in the Country over 10,000m. He has also lowered all his pb’s over all distances on the road from 5k up to half marathon and is ranked 2nd over 5 miles and 7th over the half marathon.

For the Ellis Trophy, Becky has chosen  Lewis Byng of Stratford Upon Avon AC for his 8th place at the U20 European Championships, in Boras, Sweden. Lewis won the U20 and U23 England Champships this year and is the first athlete to win both titles on the same weekend. His PB of 19.14m ranks him 2nd on the UK U20 all-time list and he is currently ranked 1st U20 in the UK and is 19th in the world as a first year U20.

Stewart Harris

Stewart Harris has served the sport for decades in a number of ways until his last outing today as Referee at one of his favourite events – the Combe 8 hosted by Sphinx AC.

The photo shows Paul Bergin of Sphinx AC on the left with Stewart in the middle and Dave Goodwin of Massey Ferguson RC on the right. Dave is the Chairman of the Warwickshire Road Race League and he presented Stewart with a League medal and a gift from the League and its Clubs. Earlier in the day Paul had presented Stewart with an inscribed tankard from Sphinx AC.

In his earlier days Stewart was a very capable distance athlete but he is better known for his service to the Sport. He was the drive behind Warwickshire Schools for a number of years but has also made a huge contribution to Club, County and Midlands Track and Field, Cross Country and Road athletics.

Stewart has a wide interest in all sports and an encyclopaedic knowledge of them but his main loves are Athletics and Rugby (and dogs and horses).

Many thanks to Stewart from all your friends and colleagues in the sport for all your service and encouragement.
